I Miss Going To The Gym and Being a Gym Rat Like my Friends

I Miss My Gym Buddies

Before Covid-19 struck I was a regular at my neighborhood’s City of Ottawa gym. I was there at least six days a week. I made one good friend, and many acquaintances.

When Covid-19 reared its ugly head early in 2020, the gym was closed out of an abundance of caution. I remember leaving the gym the last night it was open and the young women at the front desk were almost in tears. It wasn’t because they didn’t know when next they were going to see me.

The front desk staff were university and college students who worked part-time to earn some money to help with their expenses. They were only paid when they worked.

It was fun going to the gym, working out, and meeting other people who were committed to staying in shape, and in good health.

I headed for the gym after dinner Mondays to Fridays. My good friend Barry and I had the same gym hours; we left at closing time. At times, the staff — we referred to them as the “gym cops”, and they knew it — had to remind us it was closing time. We ignored the huge clocks on the walls.
